Local AEO: 5 Steps to Get AI to Always Recommend Your Local Business

Table of contents

Local AEO is the local version of Answer Engine Optimization — helping your business appear in AI answers when customers ask "find a dentist nearby" or "reputable hair salon in Da Nang". Unlike Local SEO which optimizes for Google Maps rankings, Local AEO optimizes for AI to proactively recommend you — an increasingly important customer channel.

Local AEO vs Local SEO — two different battlegrounds

When customers search traditionally, they open Google and see a list. Local SEO determines where you rank on that list.

When customers ask AI, they get one synthesized answer — usually with 1–3 specific recommendations. Local AEO determines whether you get mentioned.

Key toolsGBP, local backlinksSchema, FAQ content, consistent NAP
MeasurementRank, Google clicksAI citation, direct traffic
Time to results3–6 months4–12 weeks

Both strategies complement each other. If you haven't done Local AEO, you're missing a growing stream of customers from the AI channel.

Step 1: Declare the correct LocalBusiness schema type

Schema is the foundation — AI reads directly from it. Google Schema has dozens of subtypes of LocalBusiness. Choose the right type so AI precisely understands what you do:

Business typeSchema type
Dental clinicDentist
Hair salonHairSalon
Restaurant / EateryRestaurant
Spa / MassageDaySpa
Auto repairAutoRepair
General clinicMedicalClinic
Retail storeStore
Law officeLegalService
AccountingAccountingService

If you can't find a matching type, use LocalBusiness as the parent — better than leaving it blank.

Minimum required fields:

{
  "@type": "HairSalon",
  "name": "Huong Salon",
  "telephone": "+84901234567",
  "address": {
    "@type": "PostalAddress",
    "streetAddress": "45 Le Loi",
    "addressLocality": "District 1",
    "addressRegion": "Ho Chi Minh City",
    "postalCode": "70000",
    "addressCountry": "VN"
  },
  "openingHours": ["Mo-Sa 08:00-20:00", "Su 09:00-18:00"],
  "geo": {
    "@type": "GeoCoordinates",
    "latitude": 10.7769,
    "longitude": 106.7009
  }
}

Step 2: Optimize Google Business Profile as an AI data source

GBP is one of the primary sources AI uses to collect local information — and some AI models have real-time access to Google. An unoptimized GBP means you're blocking yourself.

GBP Checklist for Local AEO:

  • Full 750-character description with local keywords ("dentist in District 7", "near Vincom")
  • Correct primary category and up to 9 secondary categories
  • All attributes filled in (parking, wifi, payment methods...)
  • Photos updated weekly, minimum 10 high-quality photos
  • All customer Q&As answered within 48 hours
  • Weekly posts (promotions, service updates)
  • Services and products fully declared with descriptions and prices

Step 3: Build a local FAQ page

This is the content AI cites directly when customers ask about your business. The FAQ page needs to answer what AI commonly gets asked:

  • "Which [service type] in [location] is reputable?"
  • "How much does [service] cost in [area]?"
  • "Which [shop type] is open on Sundays?"
  • "Do they offer at-home [service]?"
  • "Does [business name] accept card payments?"

Create the FAQ page and use FAQPage schema so AI reads questions and answers directly without inferring from page content. See the FAQ schema guide for implementation details.

Step 4: Standardize NAP — no room for AI confusion

NAP (Name, Address, Phone) inconsistency is the most common reason AI won't confidently recommend a local business. AI compares information across sources — if it sees a different address on your website vs Google Business, or different phone numbers across directory sites, it reduces confidence in all your information.

NAP Rules:

  • Write in full, don't abbreviate: "District 1" not "D.1", "Le Loi Street" not "Le Loi"
  • Use one phone format throughout: "090 123 4567" or "+84 90 123 4567" — pick one, use everywhere
  • Consistent brand name capitalization

Places to check your NAP: Website → GBP → Facebook → Zalo OA → industry directories → local press mentions

Step 5: Collect quality reviews and respond proactively

Reviews are the social proof signals AI uses to assess trustworthiness. Content matters more than star rating.

Good reviews for Local AEO:

  • Mention specific service: "teeth whitening here is very gentle"
  • Reference location: "near Big C District 10, convenient to stop by after work"
  • Describe experience in detail — AI cites longer reviews more than short ones
  • Recent reviews (within 6 months are prioritized)

Review growth strategy:

  1. Print QR cards at checkout: "Happy with our service? Leave us a rating!"
  2. Send thank-you messages after service with review link via Zalo or SMS
  3. Respond to all reviews within 24 hours — including 1-star reviews

Embed AggregateRating schema on your website so AI knows your overall score:

"aggregateRating": {
  "@type": "AggregateRating",
  "ratingValue": "4.7",
  "reviewCount": "189",
  "bestRating": "5"
}

Local AEO is a one-time investment with long-lasting returns — very different from ads that stop when the budget runs out. Start with schema and GBP (steps 1–2), then expand to FAQ and reviews. Use the AEO checker to see your current score, or see the FAQ schema guide for the next step.

Frequently asked questions

How is Local AEO different from Local SEO?

Local SEO helps you rank high on Google Maps and search results. Local AEO helps AI (ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity) mention you when customers ask natural language questions about local services. They complement each other — not replace each other.

Should a small local business (1 shop) do Local AEO?

Yes, and they have a competitive advantage over larger competitors because AI prioritizes specific and local answers. A hair salon with complete schema and FAQ content can outrank a larger salon that hasn't done AEO.

Is Google Business Profile enough for AI to recommend me?

GBP is an important starting point but not enough. AI also needs a website with LocalBusiness schema, content answering questions, and signals from multiple sources to confidently include you in answers.

How long does it take to see Local AEO results?

Usually 4–12 weeks depending on competition level and existing signals. Businesses in less competitive industries in smaller cities tend to see results sooner.
